We are in a constant dance to find the most efficient way to align ourselves in response to gravity.
Have you ever wondered how gravity works on our bodies when we practice asana? How gravity changes our alignment for similar postures? The anatomical positioning of Virabhadrasana 3, Supta Padangusthasana 1, and Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana 1 have very similar anatomical positioning, yet the way gravity works on each shape involves completely different muscular demands.
Understanding the body’s relationship to gravity is essential in yoga for several reasons, particularly when it comes to body alignment:
1. Alignment and Stability
When the body is properly aligned with gravity, it is more stable and balanced. This allows the practitioner to stay in the posture longer, build muscular strength, and find a more fluid alignment with the breath.
2. Injury Prevention
Improper alignment can lead to overloading of certain joints or muscles, increasing the risk of injury.
3. Heightened Body Awareness
Becoming aware of our body’s relationship to gravity leads the practitioner to a greater presence in their body and themselves. The body works where it needs to, not demanding more energy from the practitioner, thus leaving them the space to be more present to their breath and to themselves.
4. Balance and Proprioception
Gravity plays a key role in balance and the perception we have of our body in space. Gravity exerts a constant force on the body. To maintain our balance, the stabilizing muscles, such as those in the trunk, legs and feet, must constantly adjust and contract to counteract this force. Working with gravity, understanding what it implies on our body helps us to make these muscles more enduring and stronger, which ultimately improves our balance.
In a Vinyasa class, the load on our body and the additional loads we impose on it during asanas therefore imply a deeper understanding of alignment in order to take our practice further.
If you would like to better understand alignments and thus explore the impact of gravity but also of movement, breathing and even stretching on our body, I invite you to register for the training weekend on this theme with Jill and Terri during the IMMERSION SERIE.
